Which World Major Should You Run First?

Issue #64

Miles, Maps & Styles

Hello Reader!

If you're running the Chicago Marathon this year, settle in because this stat might surprise you: the Chicago Marathon is in 52 days. 52! I am personally over halfway through my training plan and I feel like it's going by so fast. October 11th will be here before we realize it, so I want to make sure this edition is focused on what's great here.

As a Chicago resident, I want to welcome you to the Second City, whether it's for the marathon or just to visit. It's an incredible city with a rich history, incredible food and a lot of whimsy.

So let's dig in.

Why Chicago Should Be Your First World Major

Maybe I'm a little biased because Chicago was not only my first marathon, but also my first World Major, but if you're going to run any of the Majors, I highly recommend starting your journey in Chicago.

Here is why I think you should consider it:

  • The course elevation
  • The lower charity requirements
  • The logistics are fairly simple with a point-to-point course

Plan a Chicago Hot Dog Run

With summer coming to a close, it's worth throwing a #TBT shout out to the time me and my friend, Jen, planned a hot dog run through Wrigleyville, in Chicago.

While we planned to dress as hot dogs (our costumes were, as the kids say, fire), they were so thick and heavy we thought we might burn up. We still had a great run and plan on running a part 2.

Find out what ingredients make a classic Chicago hot dog, which hot dog stands we visited, and how the relish is bright green, read this post!

Prime Picks

While running in hot dog costumes in the summer heat isn't practical, here are a few easy ways to add a little whimsy to your run.

  • Get big bows! I've been adding a huge cheer bow to my summer running uniform this summer and I feel like an actual doll. Check out these bows on Amazon!
  • Race glitter is always a win! I love adding a little to my cheeks when I run. Here is a list of my favorite race glitter products (from freckle tattoos to glitter gel)
  • You can't enjoy whimsy if you chafe! Make sure to stock up on anti-chafe balm!

Issue #66 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! It is officially September, Labor Day is in the rear view and if you are training for a fall marathon, you know exactly what that means. The weeks are getting busier, the alarms are getting earlier, and the laundry pile is out of control. My 20 miler for the Chicago Marathon is less than two weeks away. I am at that point in my training cycle where I am equal parts proud of the miles I have banked and slightly intimidated of the ones still on the...
