Fundraise for Your Birthday

I recently tried something I want you to steal: I shared my fundraiser for my birthday on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I heard from friends I hadn't heard from in years. A few people donated not just because of the cause, but because it was personal. And it felt organic, not like a pitch.

  • Birthday posts cut through the noise. People are already primed to celebrate you; make it easy for them to do that in a meaningful way.
  • Not your birthday before race day? Use your half-birthday. Yes, that's a real thing, and yes, it works. Highlight your half birthday or the half birthday of someone you love.
  • Honor someone you love. Use the birthday of a parent, friend, or person you're running in memory of to connect to your "why."
  • LinkedIn is wildly underrated. Professional connections + charitable giving = surprisingly powerful combination. Don't sleep on LinkedIn, you'll be surprised who will be willing to support you.

Here is an example so you can steal this idea.

Hook of the Week

What's a hook?

A hook is the opening moment of a video or caption designed to stop the scroll on social and make someone want to keep watching. This is your one-second pitch for the viewer to continue watching. It can be text on screen, a visual, or both and it makes all the difference between someone watching or swiping past.

This week's hook:

Your friendly reminder by donating to [your charity] you’re also supporting my dream to run [marathon]

For your caption: Remind the reader about the cool things you're experiencing as a charity runner, what your charity is about, or the impact of where the donations go. Include how simple it is to donate to your charity, whether it’s your link in bio, sending you a Venmo for you to donate on their behalf, or other fundraising events you have coming up.

Fundraising Tips for Next Week

I want to make sure you have enough time to plan out ideas for these fundraising posts.

Here are a few ideas you plan for the week of August 24th:

  • Pluto Demoted Day (August 24): Whether you grew up with Pluto as a planet in your science class or not, highlighting the day Pluto was downgraded as a planet is a great conversation starter. You can also use puns like, “Your fundraiser is like Pluto: small, but mighty!” Or send thank you messages how your donors are “out of this world.”
  • National Dog Day (August 26): Invite dog lovers to donate in their pup’s honor or ask friends to celebrate your pup! Ask people to vote cat or dog with their donations and post the winner at the end of the day!
  • Just Because Day (August 27): The concept of this one is simple! Post on social and ask for donations “just because!”
  • Dream Day (August 28): Is this your first marathon or running a special marathon? Share what it will mean for you to cross the finish line and ask for donations to celebrate that feeling.

Issue #66 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! It is officially September, Labor Day is in the rear view and if you are training for a fall marathon, you know exactly what that means. The weeks are getting busier, the alarms are getting earlier, and the laundry pile is out of control. My 20 miler for the Chicago Marathon is less than two weeks away. I am at that point in my training cycle where I am equal parts proud of the miles I have banked and slightly intimidated of the ones still on the...
