Tips for Taper and How to Handle the Madness

Issue #63

Miles, Maps & Styles

Hello Reader!

Now that it's August, most fall marathon training plans are ramping up and I thought I'd introduce a post focused on that window between peak week and race day: Taper.

It's a wild time when the race is approaching and you're really excited! It's also time to feel vulnerable since you've invested so much. And you have a little extra free time (I once learned how to curl my hair with a flat iron during taper. I chose this week's #TBT post on runner hair care because of it).

You're probably going to want to save this email when you're tapering for a race. You can bookmark the post or save this pin to your Pinterest board.

How to Spectate and Enjoy a Marathon

You have logged the long runs. You have survived the 20-miler, the early alarms, the questionable muscle twitches, and the friends who stopped asking why you cannot make happy hour on Thursdays. And now, with race day finally on the horizon, your training plan is telling you to do less.

Knowing race day is coming and your training plan is pulling back is an odd feeling. This post is focused on the challenges that come from tapering for a marathon.

Inside the post:

  • What is taper and why do they call it "taper madness?"
  • The benefits of tapering for a marathon
  • What to know before you start the taper timeline

Remember, taper is not a break from your training. It is one of the most important parts of it.

Hair Care Tips for Runners

As someone who runs as part of her commute a lot in the summer, I need options to get ready quickly using a gym shower and get on with my day. I have found these hair products to really help save time styling my hair so I don't have to wash my hair every day.

Here are four post-workout hair care products I keep reaching for, especially when I want to look like I didn’t just run in the humidity.

Prime Picks

Here are a few of my favorite products to get through marathon training and taper!

  • Drink plenty of electrolytes! I've been loving the Raspberry Salt flavor from LMNT. So salty, really tart. So good! If you'd prefer to soak in a salt bath, this brand of mineral bath soak is very lovely.
  • Take time to focus on runner recovery. Get a foam roller (I use this one) to help release tight muscles.
  • Compression is your friend. I love putting on these compression socks (also great for flying) to help ease tension in my legs.

These are just a few products I've curated on my runner recovery store list, you can find more in the link below!

Issue #66 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! It is officially September, Labor Day is in the rear view and if you are training for a fall marathon, you know exactly what that means. The weeks are getting busier, the alarms are getting earlier, and the laundry pile is out of control. My 20 miler for the Chicago Marathon is less than two weeks away. I am at that point in my training cycle where I am equal parts proud of the miles I have banked and slightly intimidated of the ones still on the...
