Fundraising Tips for the Week of August 3rd

Issue #12

Miles for More

Hi Reader,

Last week, one of my best friends turned 50. We had a weekend of activities, including an afternoon sailing, a yacht rock party, and a small dinner.

As part of the dinner, she mentioned she had a surprise for us. The surprise? She invited a local artist, Jacob Ryan Reno, to draw Terrible Portraits of us. The portrait was exactly as described: terrible. We loved it!

The pictures brought us so much joy and laughter, it reminded me of the concept that anything can be a fundraiser.

Anything as a Fundraiser

Let me be clear, I'm not asking you to also draw terrible portraits as a fundraisier. That's Jacob's thing!

What I am saying is there is probably a talent you don't think is good enough to share or monetize. It comes down to the fact it's not about the skill, it's about offering something in exchange for supporting your fundraiser.

Can you host a cake decorating party? Sell iced cookies? Or offer to watercolor paint someone's dog?

Let me know your terrible talents, it would be fun to brainstorm these ideas. Reply and let me know!

In the meantime, here's a list of unique fundraisers you can do to support your charity.

Hook of the Week

What's a hook?

A hook is the opening moment of a video or caption designed to stop the scroll on social and make someone want to keep watching. This is your one-second pitch for the viewer to continue watching. It can be text on screen, a visual, or both and it makes all the difference between someone watching or swiping past.

This week's hook:

What if I told you could support my dream to run [marathon name] and [your charity] at the same time?

For your caption: Tell the reader the caption with how simple it is to donate to your charity, whether it’s your link in bio, sending you a Venmo for you to donate on their behalf, or other fundraising events you have coming up.

How to film it (keep it to 7 seconds!):

  1. Open with the text hook on screen over b-roll video. B-roll is observation "fly on the wall" video. No talking to the camera or voiceovers.
  2. Keep the visual moving; no static shots
  3. Add the text hook to the top of the screen (like a headline) at the start of the video
  4. Layer trending audio underneath (check your Reels or TikTok audio tab for what's climbing this week) or a song that fits the clip
  5. Let the hook do the heavy lifting! You don't need to say a word on camera
  6. In the last 3-4 seconds, add text that says Details for How to Donate Below!

Fundraising Tips for Next Week

I want to make sure you have enough time to plan out ideas for these fundraising posts.

Here are a few ideas you plan for the week of August 10th:

  • Vinyl Record Day (August 12): People who love vinyl really love vinyl. Share your love for vinyl, music, or honor someone who does! You can use this as an opportunity to create a running playlist by making a minimum donation.
  • Middle Child Day (August 12): Don’t forget about Middle Child Day! Middle children tend to be overlooked, but (hopefully) not today! Celebrate your favorite middle child with a fundraising post.

Here's more ideas to plan your August-themed fundraising ideas and read below for ideas for a whole year:

Issue #66 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! It is officially September, Labor Day is in the rear view and if you are training for a fall marathon, you know exactly what that means. The weeks are getting busier, the alarms are getting earlier, and the laundry pile is out of control. My 20 miler for the Chicago Marathon is less than two weeks away. I am at that point in my training cycle where I am equal parts proud of the miles I have banked and slightly intimidated of the ones still on the...
