Miles, Maps & Styles

Hi Reader!

This week felt extra special with the Boston Marathon on Monday. I spent the day tracking my friend Sam through the app for her entire run. I was fully committed, phone plugged into the charger, and emotionally invested in every mile.

There is something so magical about watching someone chase a goal like that. It reminded me how much heart goes into marathon training, whether you are running, cheering, or refreshing the tracker every five minutes to send energy from afar!

And this weekend we are (emotionally) heading into the London Marathon weekend. If you are running, I am already so proud of you! London was one of my favorite race experiences (I ran it last year) and I hope your day feels just as unforgettable.

With that said, let’s focus on this week’s topic: Are you ready to run a marathon? I am so excited to share a small piece of my own marathon story as part of this post. From getting a compliment that changed my life, reading this book and the moment that made me feel like I was ready to run a marathon.

To get the whole story and the readiness guide, keep reading.

New on the Blog

As I stated in the intro, writing this post was really personal for me. It made me reflect on how far I have come as a runner and what “ready” actually looks like when you’re tempted to run your first full marathon.

If you have ever wondered, am I actually ready for 26.2? This guide will help you get clear.

Inside the post, you’ll learn:

  • How to tell if you are physically and mentally ready for a marathon
  • What “ready” looks like
  • A simple way to assess your own readiness

With London on my mind this week, I had to bring this one back.

This is the exact AI packing prompt I used for my London Marathon trip last year and funny enough, it helped me realize I accidentally booked Brian at the wrong hotel! Thank goodness for our travel agent, Maggie, for helping us sort it out.

Honestly, this AI prompt saved the trip before it even started.

If you love anything that makes travel easier (especially race travel), this is such a game changer.

Prime Picks of the Week

A few things I keep reaching for when I travel for races or quick trips:

  • Away suitcase: Durable, sleek, and it just works. I have the bigger carry-on and I love can squeeze just a little more in this suitcase than a standard carry-on suitcase. I’ve had mine for SEVEN YEARS and it still looks new. Learn more here.
  • Packing cubes: My secret to staying organized and not overpacking is using packing cubes. Everything has a place and these packing cubes help compress everything in a compact space. Check out this set!
  • Clear toiletry bags: These toiletry bags are clear, so they’re perfect for TSA and keep everything easy to find.
  • Everyday travel bag: This 16L backpack from Cotopaxi is so cute in black! Perfect for race weekend essentials, a day pack, or a long travel day when you need quick access. Check it out here.

These are the little things that make travel feel smoother and less stressful, especially when you are balancing race logistics too!

Fundraising Ideas for Next Week

If you're running a marathon for a charity and need fresh ideas, this section is for you! Steal these ideas or send them to a friend who is fundraising for a marathon.

Here are a few ideas you use the week of April 27th:

  • National Superhero Day (April 28): “Be a superhero and donate!” You can even dress up for a run or share a throwback superhero moment to make it fun and engaging
  • Kentucky Derby Inspired (May 2): “Bet on me” fundraiser. Ask your friends to “bet on you” and donate to your page.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week (First week of May): Shoutout teachers who made an impact on you. This one is really heartfelt and tends to connect deeply with people!

Issue #53 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! Hope you had a chance to soak up some of the long weekend! Brian and I spent part of it out on Lake Michigan with my best friend, Dyan, for a sail. While it was chilly, we enjoyed the peaceful vibes and great company. While it was too cold to swim now, we can’t wait to jump in later in the season. The rain on Sunday kind of had other plans for us the rest of the weekend, but we got our summer kicked off officially now that our flowers are planted. We...
