Fundraising Tips for the Week of May 25th

Issue #2

Miles for More

Hi Reader!

This week's featured fundraising idea is one I just tried myself over my birthday weekend and I'm kind of obsessed with it. It's a helpful way to find another way to add options for donations to your page.

So glad you're here. Let's get into it.

Set up a Social Media Fundraiser

Have you ever noticed the donate button where you can donate directly to a charity through an Instagram post? Turns out, it's one of the easiest ways to reduce friction for your donors. Instead of asking people to find a link in your bio, they can give right in the moment without ever leaving the app.

Here's the thing I didn't realize for a long time: I always assumed donations made through Instagram wouldn't count toward my official fundraising page. But they can!

Quick note: You will need to check with your charity they can handle this ahead of time.

Once the fundraiser wraps up, email your charity with the total amount raised through your post and the platform it came from. You will need to be proactive. The charity usually receives a check with a lump sum for all donations from an external source, so it won't be labeled with your name. You'll likely need to confirm with them to add it to your page.

It's a underrated option that can make a big difference, especially for followers who want to support you but need convenience.

Host a Run Streak Fundraiser in June!

Starting June 1st, I am holding my own run streak fundraiser to support my Chicago Marathon fundraiser for Imerman Angels and I'm inviting you to join! If you're ready to leverage the miles you're already running for something bigger, this is a great opportunity to work toward your fundraising goals.

How does it work?

  • Run at least a mile every day in June
  • Ask friends to pledge for every mile you run
  • Your total mileage x their pledge = their donation amount

Why you should join:

I thought this would be a great opportunity to offer support to this community and we can run together. By joining the challenge, you'll get:

  • A step-by-step guide to set up your run streak fundraiser pledge form
  • How to share your form with friends to start collecting pledges
  • A progress tracker (pdf)
  • A group of other charity runners who are working to complete the challenge
  • Guidance along the way!

Also, it's free.

If you have other friends running for a charity (or want to share it with your charity team), please send them the link below to join.

Hook of the Week

What's a hook?

A hook is the opening moment of a video or caption designed to stop the scroll on social and make someone want to keep watching. This is your one-second pitch for the viewer to continue watching. It can be text on screen, a visual, or both and it makes all the difference between someone watching or swiping past.

This week's hook:

"[Girls/Guys] be like, "I want this" but it's literally just me running a marathon for charity.
Example:
Girls be like, "I want this" but it's literally just me running a marathon for charity.

This is a version of the popular trend, "Girls be like, "I want this!" but it's literally me [doing something simple that gives you joy]"

Watch this video to see an example.

How to film it (keep it to 7 seconds!):

  1. Open with the text hook on screen over b-roll video. B-roll is observation "fly on the wall" video. Examples would be a clip of you on a morning run clip, running in a race, or you in your cross-training routine
  2. Keep the visual moving; no static shots
  3. Add the text hook to the top of the screen (like a headline) at the start of the video
  4. Layer trending audio underneath (check your Reels or TikTok audio tab for what's climbing this week) or a song that fits the clip
  5. Let the hook do the heavy lifting! You don't need to say a word on camera if you don't want to
  6. In the last 3-4 seconds, add text that says Read Below to Learn How to Donate

For your caption: Share why this race matters to you and why this charity is close to your heart. Keep it personal and specific. You just need to offer a personal touch as to why this is important to you and include specific details how they can find your donation link.

If you try this reel, let me know! I'd love to know how it goes (tag @runwanderwear and I'll reshare it)

Fundraising Tips for Next Week

If you're running a marathon for a charity and need fresh ideas, this section is for you! Steal these ideas or send them to a friend who is fundraising for a marathon.

Here are a few ideas you plan for the week of June 1st:

  • Global Running Day (June 3): Plan a special training run (or check your local running store for group runs) and ask for donations per mile you complete, or simply encourage your running community to chip in and celebrate this day.
  • Hug Your Cat Day (June 4): Perfect for cat lovers! Ask donors to contribute in honor of their favorite feline friends. For an extra fun twist, share photos of your own cat (or your friend’s cats) with each donation.
  • National Donut Day (June 5): Offer a sweet twist to your fundraiser by asking supporters to donate the cost of a donut and to “add a zero” to their donations (e.g., $5 becomes $50) to celebrate this sweet day.

Here's ideas to start planning your June-themed fundraising ideas and read below for ideas for a whole year:

Issue #53 Miles, Maps & Styles Hi Reader! Hope you had a chance to soak up some of the long weekend! Brian and I spent part of it out on Lake Michigan with my best friend, Dyan, for a sail. While it was chilly, we enjoyed the peaceful vibes and great company. While it was too cold to swim now, we can’t wait to jump in later in the season. The rain on Sunday kind of had other plans for us the rest of the weekend, but we got our summer kicked off officially now that our flowers are planted. We...
