Fundraising Visuals
Here’s a little secret from my own fundraising seasons: the posts that got the most donations weren’t always the ones with the longest, most heartfelt captions. They were the ones with something to look at. A letter board propped up on my deck. A chalkboard with my progress scribbled across it. A visual aide in a social post can really help grab the reader's attention!
Quick tips for making them pop:
- Shoot in natural light, near a window or outdoors
- Keep the message short enough to read in 2 seconds
- Get yourself in the frame when you can. People give to people.
- Pair it with your donation link in your bio or stories so the next step is one tap away
I’ve rounded up my favorite letter boards, chalkboards, and sign supplies in one spot so you don’t have to hunt!
Hook of the Week
This week's hook is a current trend and it's a great reason to showcase your why (the reason why you're running a marathon for your charity). It's a carousel post (a post with multiple photos the user can swipe through) that takes the reader on a journey and ends on the reason you signed up to support your specific charity.
What's a hook?
A hook is the opening moment of a video or caption designed to stop the scroll on social and make someone want to keep watching. This is your one-second pitch for the viewer to continue watching. It can be text on screen, a visual, or both and it makes all the difference between someone watching or swiping past.
This week's hook:
Image 1: Pick a photo you love that's current. A race photo or a photo of an accomplishment. Add the text: I love this picture, can you make it brighter?
Image 2: Same image, but add a filter that makes it overexposed. Add the text: That's too bright, let's try black and white.
Image 3: Same picture, but add a black and white filter. Add text: Actually, bring me back to the start
Image 4: The "start photo": Add a photo that represents why you chose to run your marathon for your cause. It could be an old photo of the person you're running to honor or your own cause (you as a kid, a medical moment, etc.).
Add Music: Coldplay's The Scientist, pick the lyrics "Im going back to the start..."
Example: I picked my recent Chicago Marathon post-race selfie and my "start photo" was from my first Chicago Marathon. My caption included how when i raised money for my first charity race, I was really scared to share my fundraiser and the transition of being open about sharing my fundraising link now.
See an example here.
For your caption: Remind your friends what your charity is about or the impact of where the donations go. Include how simple it is to donate to your charity, whether it’s your link in bio, sending you a Venmo for you to donate on their behalf, or other fundraising events you have coming up.

Fundraising Tips for Next Week
I want to make sure you have enough time to plan out ideas for these fundraising posts. These ideas are meant to give you organic reasons to share your fundraiser!
Here are a few ideas you plan for the week of November 2nd:
- Movember (All Month Long): Pledge your November miles to your cause and ask donors to sponsor you per mile. Create a Movember Move challenge, where you set a distance goal for the month and ask for pledges for every mile you run.
-
World Vegan Day (November 1): Food is one of the easiest, lowest-pressure asks out there. Host a plant-based bake sale, share a mini collection of your favorite plant-based fueling recipes for a donation, or let donors vote on what you eat before your long run.
-
Día de los Muertos (November 1 to 2): Day of the Dead is a celebration of loved ones who have passed, which makes it meaningful for anyone fundraising in someone's memory. Create a digital "ofrenda" of names: donors send you the name of someone they're remembering, and you share the list on your run or in your stories.
November is almost here! Check out these ideas to plan your holiday fundraisers and read below for ideas for the whole year:
